Where can I find the rules for an unofficiated tennis match?

Peach Tennis rules are based on the USTA tennis rules, so the USTA website is a good source for finding the tennis rules.

Click here to download The Code: The Players' Guide for Unofficiated Matches

Does Peach Tennis have certain rules that they expect players to abide by?

Here at Peach Tennis we are keen on promoting friendly and competitive tennis. We expect our players to make proper line calls and promote a friendly atmosphere. We have compiled a top 10 Peach Tennis rules that we expect our players to follow.

  • 1. Give your opponent as many options as possible when scheduling your match. If you are unable to play, please help your opponent find a substitute from the Sub List on the website.
  • 2. Arrive on time for your match. If you going to be late, please call your opponent.
  • 3. Conduct yourself so that you and your opponent have a fair chance to win and to enjoy the match. Share a beverage afterwards!
  • 4. Bring everything you need to play. On a personal note, my own racquet once beat me when my opponent forgot his racquets and I lent him one of mine.
  • 5. The home player provides a new can of balls and pays any fees required. There is no ball exchange at the end of your match.
  • 6. Turn your cell phone off or to vibrate during play.
  • 7. Limit the warm-up to 10 minutes. Hit the ball to your opponent in a controlled manner to allow them to prepare to play. Courtesy dictates that you do not practice your return serve. There are no extra points for winning the warm-up!
  • 8. Call all balls good unless you are positive one is out. Make out calls immediately and clearly. The following balls should be called good: 99% out, on line, not sure, didn't see it land.
  • 9. Use good sportsmanship throughout the match. It is considered poor sportsmanship to try to hit your opponent with easy put-aways, to stall during changeovers, to not pickup balls on your side of the net, to fake injuries, to make noises during play, to use obscenities, to talk to courtside friends excessively, etc. Try to win the coveted Peach Tennis Sportsmanship award!
  • 10. Be courteous to your opponent after the match regardless of outcome. The goal is to make new friends and to enjoy the wonderful sport of tennis!

What should I do if I am injured during the season?

Lot of players get injured during the season. We broadly classify the injury into 3 different types.
   1. You have a minor injury. You are unable to play for a week or so.
   2. You have an injury and are not sure how long you are unable to play.
   3. You have an injury and you are out for the season

Case 1: (Minor injury: Out for a week)
In this case, please find a player from the SUB list and ask them to play instead of you. Note that its slightly hard to find a SUB player. So contact a lot of players in the SUB list. Also, do not wait until the deadline to find a SUB. Find a SUB as soon as you are hurt.

Case 2: (Injured: Not sure how long you are out)
In this case, immediately send an email to admin@peachtennis.com and copy all the players in your division stating that you are injured and not sure how long you are out. Please do not send email to only the League. Make sure you copy all the players in your division also. Also, it is your responsibility to find a replacement player. The League will also help you in finding a replacement player. The replacement player will play on your behalf until you recover.

Case 3: (Injured: Out for the season)
In this case, immediately send an email to admin@peachtennis.com and copy all the players in your division stating that you are injured and you are out for the season. Please do not send email to only the League. Make sure you copy all the players in your division also. Also, it is your responsibility to find a replacement player. The League will also help you in finding a replacement player. The League will transfer your schedule to the replacement player.

What should I do if I forgot my password?

Click on the link, 'Forgot your password'. You can then login using your Mother's maiden name. Your password will be automatically reset to your Mother's maiden name. If you still cannot login, please contact the League office at admin@peachtennis.com

Is it possible to play twice in the same season? If so, how can I register to play twice?

To be eligible to play twice during the same season, these are the requirements.

1. You must be in good standing with the League. New players need to wait for 1 season before they can be eligible to play twice during the same season.
2. You must have enough time to be able to play atleast 2 times a week.
3. Your location must have enough players to form 2 different divisions. (OR) You should be the kind of player who is in between levels. For example, you are a player with Level 4.5 capability. You kind of fit into both Level 4 and Level 5.

So, how does this work?
Basically, you will register another time as a completely new player. You need to append the letters 2T at the end of your username. For example, if your old username was jdoe, then you will create a new account with the username jdoe2T. This will let us place jdoe and jdoe2T in different divisions. You will register 2 times (With your old username jdoe and with your new username jdoe2T) for the season.
You can play at the same level with both accounts, or you can play 1 level higher or lower as you feel. The League has the right to determine if you can play twice in the spring season. We will place you in 2 different divisions and you can play twice during the same season.

Note:  Make sure you append your username with the letters 2T

What is a verification match? Do I need to play a verification match? If so, how do I schedule a verification match?

A Verification match allows us to properly place new players in the correct level. In a verification match, you play 2 sets against an existing League player in the same level that you signed up for. If the match is competitive then you signed up at the proper level. Otherwise, you are either too strong for your level or too weak for your level.

New players are recommended to play a verification match. It is not a requirement, but highly recommended for new players who are not sure about which level they should sign up for. However, if you are pretty confident that you signed up for the proper level based on ALTA and USTA matches then you do not need to play a verification match.

To schedule a Verification match, click on Verification -> Verification on the main menu. This should list all the players at your level who are willing to play a Verification match. Choose somebody closer to your facility and find out if they are willing to play a Verification match. To enter scores, click on Verification -> Verification Scores from the main menu.

What is the sportsmanship award? How can I nominate someone for this award?

Peach Tennis League is committed to advancing sportsmanship among players in the League. You can nominate your fellow players for the sportsmanship award based on the following criteria:
1. Ease of scheduling the match.
2. Etiquette on the tennis court.
3. Line calls and conduct during the game.

You can nominate your fellow players for this award. We will have a weekly winner for the sportsmanship award. We will send a $5 gift certificate from Your Serve Tennis store http://www.yourserve.com.

What are your rules about the 3rd set? Also do you have any time extensions?

If bothe players split sets, then you are required to play a 3rd set. However if both players agree before the match that you will play a tie-break instead of the 3rd set, then you can play a tie-break instead. Note: You need to agree to the tie-break before the match begins.
The League can grant you 1 time extension per season upon request.

How is my level determined for the next season?

At the end of the regular season if your total points is more than 90% of the maximum points available, then you will get moved automatically to the next higher level. For example, a regular season typically consists of 7 weeks. So, if you score more than 63 points, you will get moved automatically to the next higher level. Similarly, at the end of the regular season, if your total points is less than 40% of the maximum points available, then you will get moved automatically to the next lower level. For example, a regular season typically consists of 7 weeks. So, if you score less than 28 points, you will get moved automatically to the next lower level.
Also, the League marks certain players as bench mark players. Your performance against these bench mark players will also be taken into account when determining your level for the next season.

(Women only) Do you have a separate league for Weekday women and Business women?

Please update your profile and enter the division in which you would like to be placed. The League will place you in the division that you have selected. To update your profile click on My Info -> My Profile on the main menu. The following is a brief description of the match times for each division.

Day Division: I am available during the day only and sometimes during the weekends.
Business Division: I work and am available only after 5 pm on weekdays. Also available on most weekends.
Dont care: Any time is fine for me.

I thought the League was free. Why am I being charged $25?

We are facing increasing costs in our daily operations of the League. In addition to it, we are facing strong competition from other leagues as well. We are trying to advertise more and offer more attractive prizes to increase the competition and reduce driving times. Unfortunately, all of this costs money and we cannot keep the league free any longer. We will be charging a nominal fee of $25 to run the league. We believe this is a reasonable amount compared to other leagues. We hope that you continue to play in Peach Tennis League. Thank you for your support.

How can I access my Sub List?

To access the Sub List, navigate to My Info -> My Sub List.

What should I do if my opponent does not return my call or email me back?

Both players are equally responsible for trying to contact each other to schedule a match. Try to reach your opponent by both Phone (Home, Work, Cell) and Email. If your opponent still does not contact you before Tuesday of the scheduled week, you can play against a SUB in your level (or) you can take a default. If you take a default you will get 7 points and your opponent will not get any points.

What should I do if my opponent and I cannot find a convenient time to play each other?

If for some reason, you and your opponent cannot find a convenient time to schedule your match both during the regular week and in the extra week, then you and your opponent have the option of playing a SUB instead.
This is how it works. You choose a SUB from your level and play your match against him / her. Your opponent also chooses a SUB from the same level and plays him / her. Your matches will be independent and so will your scores. For example, if you win 6-4 6-3, you will get 10 points. If your opponent also wins 6-2 6-2, then your opponent will also get 10 points.
When reporting the score choose the option.
I played against: A Sub; Opponent also plays Sub

This however, is not applicable for playoffs. During the playoffs, there are no extensions for the deadline. If you are not able to schedule the match with your opponent, then the tie-break would be
1. Whoever is available to play the most number of days
2. Whoever has the highest seed

What should I do if my opponent is late for a scheduled match?

You and your opponent have scheduled a match. If your opponent is running late for your scheduled match, please call them on their cell phone to see if you can help them with directions or traffic. We encourage you to wait on your opponent as long as possible in order to play the match because playing matches is the goal of the league. However, if you opponent is more than 20 minutes late and you cannot wait any longer, you are entitled to take a 6-0,6-0 win.

My driving times are high. Why?

Playing closer to home is always desirable. To this extent, the league tries to schedule players based on their skill level and geographic location within a 12 mile radius. However, there may be cases where certain players have longer driving times than usual. As the number of players playing in the league increases, the driving times will decrease.

What is a default? How can I report scores if my opponent defaulted?

If your scheduled opponent does not return your call or email you back before Tuesday of the scheduled week, you can either take a default or play against a Sub. In both cases, your opponent will not receive any points. You will receive 7 points if you take a default. If you play against a Sub, you will receive points based on the outcome of the match. To report a default, choose the option
I played against: My Opponent defaulted

How can I report scores if my opponent retired during the match?

If your opponent retires during the middle of the match for whatever reasons (injured, unexpected emergency, late for something), you win. Simply enter scores up to the point where the match was stopped choosing the option that your opponent retired during the match. You will receive 8 or 10 points depending on whether your opponent won a set or not. Choose the option
Result of Match: Other player retired during match

How can I report scores if I played against a SUB?

There are a few options on how to report scores if you played against a SUB.
Case 1:
Your opponent provided the SUB. In this case, your opponent is unable to play because of some valid reason. But your opponent contacted you and also provided you with a SUB from the same level to play instead of him / her. Both you and your opponent will receive points based on the outcome of the match against the SUB.
Case 2:
Your opponent did not contact you at all. You had to choose a SUB on your own. In this case, the opponent does not receive any points. You will receive points based on the outcome of the match against the SUB.
Case 3:
You and your opponent cannot decide on a convenient time to play. Your opponent is free during the early part of the week and you are free during the later part of the week. In this case, your opponent can play a SUB and you can play another SUB. Both you and your opponent will receive points. You will receive points based on your match against your SUB, and your opponent will receive points based on the match against his / her SUB.

In all cases, choose the proper case from the following options.

This week I am scheduled to play a SUB. What does this mean?

In a division with odd number of players (7 or 9), there is 1 week when a certain player is scheduled to play a SUB. In this case, you can play against any SUB in your level. Report scores as you would normally do against any scheduled opponent. When reporting the scores, choose the option
I played against: My Scheduled Opponent

I have a bye for this week. What should I do?

The regular season consists of 8 weeks. Players play a total of 7 matches. So there is 1 weeek when all players will have a bye week. You can use this bye week to play your matches ahead of schedule. The League recommends that you play your matches ahead of schedule. You can also use this bye week to make sure all the scores entered so far are correct.

Who should report the scores?

It is the responsibility of the winner to report scores. However, if the winner is not in a position to report the scores, the opponent can report the scores also.

What should I do if I enter the scores incorrectly?

Simply reenter the scores correctly. The system should automatically change the scores. If there is an error, please contact the League office.

What should I do if I cannot play a certain week?

If you cannot play a certain week, make sure you contact your opponent in advance and let him know about it. Also, provide your opponent with a SUB from your level. This way you will not lose any points.

What should I do if my opponent starts throwing the racket all the time and it affects my play?

Sometimes players get frustrated and throw their rackets. However, if this continues more than once and if it starts to affect your game, then you should warn the player to not throw the racket. If the opponent throws the racket after the warning, then you win the next point. Subsequent racket throws result in the opponent forfeiting the game and then the match itself.

How can I check if I qualified for playoffs? Also, how can I update my availability for the playoffs?

You can check if you are qualified for the playoffs by clicking on My Info -> My Playoff Standing. On the same page, you can also update your availability for the playoffs. See screenshot for more details.

What should I do if my opponent and I cannot schedule our match during the playoffs?

Both players are equally responsible for contacting each other to schedule your match. If for some reason, you are not able to schedule your match, then the player who has the most number of available days to play wins. If that is a tie, then the higher seed player wins and advances to the next round.
